Description:
This position is for a Civil/Structural Engineer who will work a multi-year United Kingdom (UK) nuclear infrastructure programme for which Bechtel are the Technical Partner (covering Project Management and Engineering services). This project is at the conceptual design phases driving a programme involving a multi-billion investment in nuclear and non-nuclear facilities.
We are looking for a proactive and driven Civil/Structural Engineer who will support a Project Engineering Manager as the technical representative for engineering activities related to the planning, design, execution, and closeout of civil/structural activities. You will assist in conceptual engineering design efforts, which may include the delivery of technical documents, execution of engineering schedule activities, quality checks, and overall project delivery. You will be involved in preparing technical reports, studies, design and procurement documentation, and calculations using engineering software, and supporting systems.
You will have the ability to work independently, use engineering judgment, and devise new approaches to solving problems. In addition, you will help others and respond to requests for help in solving technical or procedural problems or issues.
Responsibilities
- Conduct and coordinate conceptual and detailed phases of engineering work in accordance with company, contract, and industry codes and standard.
- Apply engineering principles for the analysis and design of structures, systems, and components. Influence the outcome of technical issue resolution within the discipline/function, as well as with third parties (customer, suppliers, and regulators).
- Perform work that involves conventional engineering practice but may include complex features such as resolving conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials and/or difficult coordination requirements.
- Have extensive technical knowledge of engineering systems, engineering calculations, applications of engineering methods and materials, and applications of 2-D and 3-D computer aided design (CAD) and computer aided engineering (CAE) to resolve engineering problems. Ensure the design is cost effective, in accordance with applicable safety, health, environmental regulations, customer requirements and engineering codes & standards.
- Prepare and/or assist in the preparation of cost estimates, quantity take-offs and staffing requirements for proposals, forecasts and change orders.
- Participate in interdisciplinary and cross-functional reviews of documents and deliverables. Effectively communicate design requirements and status across the project, and to customers, vendors, construction, and other organisations.
- Coordinate with the Systems Engineering group and other groups in development of project and system requirements.
Skills & Qualifications
Essential:
- Must have Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Structural Engineering from an accredited university or college with extensive and relevant EPC/EPCM design experience on major infrastructure projects.
- Must have working knowledge of engineering procedures, covering discipline deliverable production & control.
- Working knowledge of Tekla structural design software or similar application.
- Strong knowledge of industry/regulatory codes and standards, engineering processes and design criteria.
- General understanding of civil/structural design processes and deliverables of other engineering disciplines.
- Experience working with design and construction contracts.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Must be able to obtain a SC Clearance for access to the AWE Site.
Desirable
- Working knowledge of related non‐reactor nuclear codes, standards, best practice non-reactor nuclear/hazardous confinement systems, and knowledge in generation of engineering documents in a nuclear environment.
- Experience in front end design and equipment selection for nuclear, or nuclear chemical facilities including cranes, and other material handling equipment.
