Description:
Balfour Beatty, a global leader in infrastructure and construction, is seeking a Social Impact Manager to play a critical role in delivering one of the most ambitious sustainability initiatives in the UK—the Net Zero Teesside (NZT) Power project. This first-of-its-kind gas-fired power station with carbon capture and storage, developed in partnership with BP (British Petroleum) and other consortium partners, aims to establish Teesside as the UK’s first decarbonised industrial cluster.
As the Social Impact Manager, you will lead the development and execution of a robust Social Impact Action Plan, ensuring the project creates positive social value for the local community, enhances local prosperity, and strengthens regional resilience. This role will require a deep understanding of social sustainability, the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders, and a creative approach to delivering meaningful community engagement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and lead the delivery of the Local Content Plan and ensure that the Social Impact KPIs for the NZT Power project are achieved.
- Work collaboratively with the Balfour Beatty Group Social Impact team and project partners to align strategies and share best practices.
- Represent Balfour Beatty at industry forums, customer and supplier events, showcasing social impact achievements to promote the company’s leadership in sustainability.
- Collaborate with procurement, estimating, and commercial teams to embed social impact criteria into tender processes and supply chain strategies.
- Identify and engage with local charities, community groups, educational institutions, and not-for-profits to develop impactful local initiatives.
- Build and maintain partnerships with local stakeholders, including local authorities, NGOs, community organisations, and government bodies.
- Deliver training and consultation to internal teams, ensuring social impact becomes embedded within daily project delivery.
- Monitor, analyse, and report on social impact performance using qualitative and quantitative data, feeding into both project and Group-level reporting.
- Prepare award submissions, develop case studies, and contribute to thought leadership materials showcasing the project’s impact.
- Manage social impact budgets in collaboration with the project’s commercial team.
What You’ll Bring:
- Strong expertise in developing and delivering social impact strategies for major infrastructure projects.
- Ability to manage a diverse portfolio of initiatives across community engagement, skills development, education partnerships, volunteering, and supply chain social value.
- Excellent stakeholder management skills with the confidence to engage at all levels—from local communities to government bodies and project partners.
- Knowledge of Social Value legislation, Social Value Portal TOMs framework, and the UK social impact landscape.
- Experience in reporting and analysing social value data, with the ability to demonstrate tangible impact.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with experience in presenting to senior stakeholders and external audiences.
- Creative thinker, able to design innovative social impact initiatives that leave a lasting legacy in Teesside.
- Ability to influence procurement and commercial teams, ensuring social impact is fully embedded in project delivery processes.
- Full UK Driving License (travel across the region will be required).
