Description:


You will need exceptional knowledge and experience of UK merger control, with a good understanding of the commercial, economic, legal and regulatory dynamics driving mergers across the UK economy and globally.

You will also need demonstrable understanding of the legal and economic frameworks underpinning the CMA’s mergers work.

A measurable track record of taking strategic decisions, proactively managing risks and operating collegiately within complex governance arrangements is equally important.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities
 

  • Be an active, collaborative and engaged member of the CMA’s Senior Leadership Team, with shared responsibility for the overall senior leadership of the CMA in line with the CMA’s strategy and values.
  • Play an active part in relevant senior decision-making fora including meetings of the Board, XCo, CPC, RPPC and other relevant committees and groups as appropriate.
  • Work with the CEO and Executive Director to set the overall strategic direction for the CMA’s Mergers work.
  • Responsible for the high-quality, robust, and efficient delivery of the CMA’s merger control portfolio, leading cases across phase 1 and 2 investigations ensuring they are managed and delivered to time, cost, quality outcomes.
  • In addition to case related work the roleholder will play an active role in shaping the CMA’s mergers policy and practice to ensure we continually improve the way we work in merger control.
  • Be an inspiring and motivational leader to colleagues within the Mergers Group and working across the CMA’s Mergers projects, providing a clear vision and a supportive and empowering leadership style.
  • Build and maintain the required skills, expertise, and diversity within the CMA’s Mergers Group, supporting staff development, developing the local leadership and management teams, and acting as a role model, always demonstrating the CMA values.
  • Directly lead a team of professional colleagues, supported by other advisory colleagues through a matrix model, ensuring effective resourcing of ongoing and prospective projects including in light of resourcing demands across the CMA.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relations with the Panel and Inquiry Chairs and Panel Members, respecting their independence in decision-making while supporting an integrated and coherent merger control regime.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with counterparts, including relevant government departments, international competition authorities, relevant business, legal, economic, consumer and other representative stakeholder groups operating at all times as a strong advocate for the CMA externally.
