The University of Warwick is seeking a talented individual with expertise in process and/or materials modelling to join their Advanced Steel Research Centre (ASRC) within the Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG). The role involves working on developing digital twins for steel processing, aiming to improve steel products and processes for industrial applications.

Steel manufacturing is a complex, multi-stage activity, and this role will contribute to developing process models that integrate metallurgical knowledge to reduce costs and improve performance for new grades of steel. The digital twins will help simulate processes and optimize steel production methods.

The role requires creating finite element models for specific steel processing stages and collaborating with the research team to incorporate metallurgical functions. Experience with software such as COMSOL, ThermoCalc, Matlab, and JMatPro is beneficial. This work will include the development of digital twins for both lab and industrial-scale processes.

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop digital twins for steel processing to support new grade development and process optimization.
• Create finite element models for specific steel processing stages.
• Collaborate with the research team to integrate metallurgical knowledge into process models.
• Work with existing modelling platforms (e.g., COMSOL, Matlab, ThermoCalc) to simulate steel manufacturing processes.
• Contribute to improving competitiveness in the steel and metal industries through enhanced process understanding.

Requirements:

• PhD in a relevant field or near submission, or equivalent industrial experience.
• Strong background in process and/or materials modelling.
• Experience with finite element modelling and familiarity with software such as COMSOL, ThermoCalc, Matlab, and JMatPro.
• Understanding of metallurgical processes and their impact on steel manufacturing.
• Ability to collaborate effectively in a research team.
