Research Associate In Isotope Geochemistry

Description:

Cardiff University is seeking an isotope geochemist to join the international Horizon Europe Past2Future Project. The project focuses on using past climate change records to improve future climate projections. You will analyse foraminifera for boron isotopic composition, use geochemical records to reconstruct past changes in pCO2 and ocean chemistry, and contribute to public engagement activities. This full-time role is based in the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences and offers an opportunity for research excellence in isotope geochemistry and palaeoclimate studies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyse foraminifera for boron isotopic composition.
  • Reconstruct past changes in pCO2 and ocean chemistry using geochemical data.
  • Engage in public outreach and science communication through Past2Future activities.
  • Conduct independent research, publish findings in academic journals, and contribute to the School’s research performance.
  • Develop research proposals, attend conferences, and collaborate with colleagues and external networks.

Candidate Specifications:

  • Essential:

    • Postgraduate degree (PhD or nearing completion) in a relevant field.
    • Expertise in isotope geochemistry, particularly boron isotope analysis.
    • Experience in palaeoclimate and palaeoceanography research.
    • Proven ability to publish in international journals.
    • Knowledge of CO2 reconstruction techniques using boron isotopes.
    • Ability to participate in public engagement and scientific communication.
  • Desirable:

    • Experience in public engagement activities.
    • Familiarity with other geochemical proxies, such as trace metal and neodymium isotope analysis.
    • Experience developing research networks and securing competitive research funding.

Salary Range: £40,247 - £45,163 per annum (Grade 6)

Benefits:

  • Flexible working options, including blended working (campus and remote work).
