Principal Rolling Stock Engineer

Description:

To lead the development and optimisation of allocated areas of RDG’s Engineering strategy to deliver benefits to members in respect of the development of legislation, regulation, standards, research projects and supply chain activities relevant to rolling stock and depot infrastructure.

To ensure that RDG members’ interests are represented at a senior level across a broad range of industry bodies in GB, Europe, and internationally, and that members are familiar with and support RDG Engineering’s activities. This is achieved through working closely with RDG members to support the Train Operator Engineering community.

To manage the Engineering Budgets and contractors that work for RDG in areas of European legislation, regulation and standards development.

To act as Line Manager to the Rolling Stock Engineer.

Key Responsibilities:

• To influence the future strategic direction of the GB rail industry in relation to fleet and depot infrastructure.
• To provide specialist input to the development of GB, European and International standards, and RSSB research projects pertinent to rolling stock and depot infrastructure.
• To brief (and consult where appropriate) senior RDG governance bodies on the content of standards relevant to wider rail activities, in terms of technical content and the implications of such.
• Take part in consultation activities into RAIB reports, representing the views of members and feeding back relevant information to members.
• To facilitate information sharing activities and workshops as and when a need is identified.
• Manage consultants and contractors engaged to support RDG engineering activities in the allocated areas.
• Act as the Line Manager to the Rolling Stock Engineer by carrying out annual reviews, priority setting, sign off of expenses, agreement of leave and personal development.
• Provide support to developing engineers at RDG and throughout the rail industry (including those enrolled in the Railway Engineering Graduate Scheme).
