Principal Civil Engineer

Description:

Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) is seeking a Principal Civil Engineer to lead the design, planning, and execution of civil engineering projects within the water and wastewater sector. As a fully integrated design and build business, MMB combines Mott MacDonald’s design expertise with JN Bentley’s contracting experience to deliver award-winning projects.

This role will be part of MMB’s multi-million-pound AMP8 framework with South West Water, supporting major water and wastewater projects across Cornwall, Devon, the Isles of Scilly, Dorset, and Somerset. The framework runs until 2029, with a potential extension for an additional five years.

As a Principal Civil Engineer, you will be responsible for leading civil engineering functions across the project lifecycle, ensuring efficient, practical, and safe solutions from concept design to construction and commissioning.

Key Responsibilities:

✅ Lead and oversee the design, planning, and execution of civil engineering work
✅ Provide technical guidance and ensure designs meet current legislation and industry standards
✅ Collaborate closely with commercial, operational, and construction teams to develop efficient solutions
✅ Engage with clients and stakeholders, ensuring strong relationships and alignment with project goals
✅ Manage interfaces between civil engineering and other disciplines, ensuring seamless integration
✅ Conduct technical reviews, acting as a checker on project documents
✅ Identify process improvements, including standard design development, sustainable solutions, and digital tools
✅ Perform site reviews to ensure buildability and system integration
✅ Mentor and develop junior engineers, supporting their professional growth and skill development

Candidate Requirements:

✔ Degree in Civil Engineering or related field
✔ Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with a relevant engineering institution
✔ Proven experience managing multiple projects, delivering high-quality work within deadlines
✔ Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
✔ Ability to travel to project sites within the operational region
✔ Comprehensive knowledge of water and wastewater engineering standards

Preferred Skills & Experience:

🔹 Experience in sustainable design and green building practices
🔹 Proficiency in civil engineering software and digital tools
🔹 Strong understanding of regulatory requirements and industry standards in water infrastructure
🔹 Experience with temporary works design and risk management
