Mechanical Engineering Technician

The Mechanical Engineering Technician role is to support a full and diverse mechanical engineering service within Babraham Institute buildings located on the Babraham Research Campus. This includes attending to boiler plant, air conditioning plant and ancillary services including plumbing work.

The post is within a small in-house maintenance team carrying out day to day remedial and PPM tasks to maintain the institutes operations and compliance for all relevant regulations and legislation.

The post holder is overseen day to day by a Mechanical Supervisor answering to a Mechanical Manager with over all mechanical management responsible.

Specific training is a requirement within the post and is provided by the Institute.

Applicants with GCSEs (Grades A* to C) or equivalent in Maths and English are desirable. NVQ Level 2 or 3 or equivalent in mechanical engineering is essential, with an understanding of relevant regulations and legislation and carrying out of PPMs to meet relevant regulations and legislation. E.g. control of legionella, pressurised systems.

A strong understanding of mechanical systems and the ability to identify issues, analyse root causes, and implement solutions across a variety of plant including Steam, water, AHU and chilled water is essential for this post.

Working with and assist other disciplines within the maintenance department to maintain a high standard of delivery to BI science, including departmental non-mechanical tasks as requested by BCE Managers forms part of the post holders’ duties.

The successful applicant will be required to be part of an overtime rota covering plant room checks work during weekends and public holidays and an on-call rota and part of an out of hours on call team rota.
