Lead Automation Engineer

 

Description:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Lead Automation Engineer to join a growing business that is launching into the UK market. As the sole UK-based Engineer, you will work closely with international teams and blue-chip FMCG customers. This is a key position that offers significant autonomy and the chance to lead the development of a new software house in the UK.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and program automation control systems using Siemens DCS, PLC, HMI, and SCADA, to meet customer specifications.
  • Develop technical documentation, including functional safety studies, FEED, design, test documents, and operational manuals.
  • Engage directly with clients to understand their technical needs and develop long-term relationships.
  • Ensure processes operate safely and efficiently, adhering to customer requirements.
  • Lead teams of engineers and technicians, ensuring project milestones are met.
  • Willingness to travel and work on overseas project sites as required.

Key Requirements:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in industrial automation systems.
  • Experience with Siemens PLCs (S7-300/400/1200/1500), TIA Portal, Step 7, PCS 7, and HMI/SCADA systems like WinCC and InTouch.
  • Knowledge of batch process automation with either PCS7 or PlantPax.
  • Strong understanding of safety systems, including relays, PLCs, and compliance with IEC 61508/6151 standards.
  • Familiarity with communication protocols such as Profibus, ProfiNet, and Modbus.
  • Ability to design and develop technical documentation (FDS, FAT/SAT, O&Ms).
  • Full project lifecycle experience, from design, coding, testing, and commissioning.
  • Sales and team management experience is a bonus, with higher salary and commission options for suitable candidates.

  • The role will initially be home-based, with plans to establish an office in the West Midlands.
  • Flexibility for 20-30% international travel as required for projects.
  • After settling into the role, you will have the opportunity to build your own team of Control Engineers.
