Here at National Highways, we have an exciting opportunity to join us as Head of Network Analysis and Statistics. You will focus on devising, defining, and delivering a programme of analysis across answering questions such as how can we make our roads safer? How can we reduce congestion? Or how could we improve our customers experience?

 

You’ll be leading a dedicated team of data analysts, operational researchers, and statisticians, delivering analysis across the areas such as of road safety, performance, customer satisfaction and communications. Overseeing the production and provision of analytical and statistical insights you’ll challenge, inform, and enable the business improve delivery.

 

This role can be based in Birmingham, Guildford, Exeter or Manchester. Travel between those locations and to other National Highways and stakeholder offices will be required. What you will be leading on

  • Championing the group's work to both internal and external stakeholders. Ensuring a consistency of approach, continuous development and sharing of best practice
  • Setting the vision and direction for the Network Analysis and Statistics Group; ensuring the group remains focused on achieving goals effectively and efficiently.
  • Developing and delivering the company vision for statistics, including how statistics and analysis are visualised, communicated and published.
  • Developing and delivering impactful analytical insights to improve and change our approaches and outcomes.
  • Working across the company, including with our Digital Services directorate to make consistent data and analysis accessible internally and publicly.
  • Management of the group; motivating and leading the team. Overseeing staff management responsibilities including goal setting, performance monitoring & reviews, attendance management, coaching, reviewing ongoing development needs and building resilience to ensure continuous improvement within the field of work.
  • Setting the ambition and coordinating the development and production of National Highway’s Performance Specification, including the design and development of performance metrics, forecasts and targets and negotiating with key internal and external stakeholders
  • Ensuring a suite of network performance metrics in development are progressed through key milestones.
  • Ensuring that existing network performance metric reporting commitments are met. Leading the group in developing our understanding of network performance including delay. Developing and delivering a research programme to improve our analysis and subject matter expertise in this area.

 

To be successful

  • Experience of directing the communication of analysis and statistics in an innovative and audience-appropriate way
  • Experience of successfully leading and motivating a team of technical experts. Able to develop and share a vision, provide direction and provide honest and fair feedback and manage team performance successfully.
  • Strong evidence of leading the development and delivery of a complex, high profile analytical programme at an organisational level. Experience of successfully managing multiple priorities and giving clarity and direction on delivery priorities
  • Specialist knowledge of developing a portfolio of corporate performance metrics, ensuring these align to company outcomes and strategic vision. A successful background in influencing and negotiating with internal and external stakeholders to gain approval at a senior level
  • A proven track record in providing organisational direction on analytical and / or statistical guidance and standards, including analytical assurance Demonstrable experience of ensuring lessons are learnt to improve performance and that analytical capabilities and resilience are developed
  • A Degree or Masters qualification in a relevant discipline (e.g. scientific, quantitative, analytical, operational research) or ability to demonstrate greater applied on the job experience and alternative development activities. A background in transport analysis is desirable but not essential
