Environmental Manager

 

Description:

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is seeking an Environmental Manager to join the Environment Office Team and contribute to the sustainable management of environmental impacts across Antarctic science and operations. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work on environmental impact assessments, waste management, oil spill response procedures, and environmental reporting, while collaborating with science, logistics, and sustainability teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review and approve Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) at the Preliminary Assessment level, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
  • Manage waste disposal processes for BAS stations, including coordination with UK waste contractors and compliance with waste import regulations.
  • Develop and enhance oil spill response procedures, providing environmental advice when needed.
  • Support sustainability initiatives, including ISO14001 EMS, biosecurity risk management, and environmental policy development.
  • Work on high-impact projects, such as the Antarctic Infrastructure Modernisation Programme (AIMP) and updates to BAS environmental strategy.
  • Prepare environmental compliance reports, conduct environmental analysis, and deliver training for deployed staff.
  • Represent BAS at international meetings, collaborating with the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and other stakeholders.

Requirements:

Education & Experience:

  • Undergraduate degree in environmental sciences or a related field.
  • Experience or strong knowledge of environmental sustainability management, particularly in EIAs, waste management, and contingency planning.
  • Proven ability to manage tasks from start to completion in a structured and organized manner.
  • Experience in researching, analyzing, and interpreting environmental data for reporting purposes.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to engage with scientists, policymakers, and operational teams.
