Our team is based primarily in London with editors around England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. We are seeking a candidate based in the Republic of Ireland. The work is chiefly online, and the Ireland Editor will work remotely with our editorial team, who also are largely working remotely. Occasional travel to the UK will be necessary. Duties of the role include:

 

  • Identifying current news stories to commission against, finding appropriate academic experts to provide insights to our readers, and working with the academic to edit pieces to be suitable for a non-specialist audience.
  • Finding timeless, off-diary stories from Irish universities based on research.
  • Ensuring that articles, even if Irish in origin, are suitable for a global audience.
  • Responding to pitches from academics and university comms offices.
  • Developing relationships and contacts within universities to get access to a wide range of researchers and stories, including yet-to-be published new research.
  • Remotely liaising with section editors from the editorial team, based in London and around the UK, and also with the European editorial team.
  • Hosting media training sessions, online and in person, for researchers from The Conversation’s member institutions in Ireland.
  • Maintaining relationships with The Conversation’s member institutions in Ireland.
  • Where relevant, to work with The Conversation’s audio team to develop ideas and content for podcasts or other audio content featuring Irish academics.
  • Supporting the research community in Ireland through training, webinars, podcasts and other events, particularly in respect of early career researchers and underrepresented groups.
  • To ascertain as far as is possible any impact, influence or post-publication activity that has come about as a result of the publication of an article for The Conversation. To feed into or produce occasional reports on the same.
  • To promote The Conversation’s work across the research sector in Ireland, among academics, universities and other research sector bodies.
  • To network with journalists and other contacts in the Irish media in order to build awareness of The Conversation and its content, available to others under Creative Commons, in order to encourage republication and greater use of our content and follow-up with authors.
  • To represent The Conversation at events in the Republic of Ireland.
