Control Design Engineer

Description:

Mott MacDonald Bentley is seeking a Protection and Control (Secondary) Design Engineer for a key role in the 150MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project at Wilton International, Teesside. The project, poised to become Europe’s largest battery energy storage system, will play a vital part in strengthening the UK’s grid resilience and supporting net-zero targets.

As part of the electrical design team, the Protection and Control Design Engineer will be responsible for the interfacing of electrical equipment within HV or EHV substations, ensuring the protection and control strategy is executed effectively. Key duties include compliance with British and international standards, including ENA G99 and DNO’s G81, as well as coordination with other design disciplines to provide complex design solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design protection and control systems for HV/EHV substations, from 11kV to 132kV, ideally extending to 275kV and 400kV electrical projects.

• Collaborate with other design teams to develop integrated solutions.

• Ensure all designs comply with relevant standards, customer requirements, and contract specifications.

• Proactively address challenges and problems, ensuring deadlines are met efficiently.

What You’ll Need:

• A Degree/HND/HNC in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems Electrical preferred).

• Previous experience in the power industry (consultancy, contractor, or utility).

• Demonstrable experience in the design of complete HVAC protection systems (11kV to 132kV, ideally 275kV and 400kV).

• Understanding of industry HV and EHV substation installation standards within the UK.

• Strong communication, organization, and technical documentation skills.
