Description:

The Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a motivated and experienced Consultant in Endocrinology and Diabetes, with leadership in the Diabetic Insulin Pump Service. This is a fantastic opportunity to join an established and collaborative team of six consultants, delivering specialist inpatient and outpatient services to the local population.

The role is based at Great Western Hospital in Swindon, with the flexibility to work remotely for part of the week. The post covers an 18-bed specialist and general medical ward on a rota basis (1 month in every 4) and general internal medicine (GIM) on-call duties (1:16 weekdays and approximately 1:8 weekends).

Main Responsibilities:

  • Inpatient diabetes in-reach service, managing specialist and general medical patients.
  • Outpatient clinics, including Hot Diabetes, general Endocrinology and Diabetes clinics, Thyrotoxicosis clinics, and regular MDT meetings.
  • Dedicated virtual clinics for reviewing outpatient and inpatient results.
  • Participation in local and regional MDT meetings, including collaboration with Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolism (OCDEM) for tertiary referrals.
  • Providing advice and guidance to local GPs via the Cinapsis electronic platform.
  • Ward cover on a 4-monthly rota, along with emergency on-call participation.
  • Supporting the Clinical Lead in policy development and service improvement.
  • Active participation in teaching, training, and supervision of junior staff, contributing to the educational commitments of the department.
  • Supporting governance, quality improvement initiatives, and clinical risk management within the Trust.

Specialist Services within the Department:

  • Endocrinology: Thyrotoxicosis, Male Hypogonadism, Pituitary, Secondary Hypertension.
  • Diabetes: Foot Attack, Complex Type 2 Diabetes, Hot Diabetes, Atypical Diabetes, Antenatal Diabetes/Endocrinology, Preconception, Young Adult Diabetes, Endocrine Transition Clinic.
  • Multidisciplinary Tier 3 Weight Management Service.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Full GMC registration.
  • CCT (or equivalent) in Endocrinology & Diabetes and General Internal Medicine (GIM) at the time of appointment, or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview.
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent.

Desirable Attributes:

  • Sub-specialty interests aligned with departmental needs.
  • Experience with service development, policy formulation, and quality improvement.
  • Experience in teaching and training undergraduate and postgraduate learners.
