Role Overview: As a Cable System Design Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in the design and engineering of high-voltage (HV) AC and DC electrical cable systems for transmission level applications. Leveraging your expertise in cable manufacturing and design principles, you will ensure the integrity, reliability, and performance of our cable systems across various environments and applications.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with project teams to design and engineer cable systems tailored to project requirements and specifications.
- Conduct thorough analysis and assessments of cable systems, including thermo-mechanical design, electrical current carrying capacity, and ventilation/cooling considerations.
- Ensure compliance with relevant standards, regulations, and procedures, with a particular focus on National Grid standards and specifications.
- Support System Engineering initiatives and participate in Reliability/Availability/Maintainability/Safety (RAMS) studies to optimize system performance and reliability.
- Coordinate closely with project delivery teams and Cable System Designers to facilitate seamless integration of cable systems into project plans and timelines.
- Provide expertise and guidance on design assurance and quality control processes, including thorough checking and validation of design outputs.
- Contribute to tender development activities by providing technical input and expertise, ensuring alignment with project objectives and client requirements.
- Demonstrate proficiency in Principle Designer responsibilities as outlined in National Grid TP188 (now SR188), ensuring compliance and adherence to relevant guidelines.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field; advanced degree preferred.
- Proven experience in cable system design within the cable manufacturing industry, with a focus on HV AC and DC electrical cable systems at transmission level (400kV and above).
- In-depth knowledge of underground cable system design principles and practices, including thermo-mechanical considerations and electrical performance parameters.
- Familiarity with National Grid standards, specifications, and procedures, with a strong preference for candidates with direct experience working within National Grid projects.
- Proficiency in conducting RAMS studies and applying reliability engineering principles to cable system design and engineering.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to effectively liaise with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a keen attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality results.
- Prior experience in tender development and familiarity with procurement processes is advantageous.
