Animal Ancillary Technician

 

Description:

The University of Sheffield is seeking an Animal Ancillary Technician to join its dedicated team within the university’s animal research facilities. This role supports high-quality research by maintaining hygiene, sterilization, and operational efficiency across various laboratory environments. The position involves working with specialized equipment, ensuring the well-being of laboratory animals, and contributing to an efficient research support system.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Equipment & Facility Maintenance:

    • Clean cages, bottles, and relevant equipment according to set schedules.
    • Operate washing and sterilization machinery, ensuring proper sterilization of consumables.
    • Conduct sterility testing of autoclaves to meet ISO quality control standards.
    • Maintain accurate records of machine usage, sterilization, and waste disposal.
  • Animal Care & Laboratory Support:

    • Assist in routine cleaning of animal holding areas and basic husbandry tasks (e.g., cleaning enclosures, providing bedding, food, and water).
    • Perform general maintenance of animal holding facilities, including filter changes and deep cleaning.
    • Support waste management, unloading deliveries, and stock handling.
  • Operational Duties:

    • Drive a small delivery van between university sites to transport supplies and equipment.
    • Follow departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and ISO regulations for safe working practices.
    • Report equipment malfunctions and liaise with engineers for necessary repairs.
    • Organize daily workload using initiative while collaborating with the team.

Required Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong desire to work in an animal laboratory environment.
  • Full clean driving license (required for transporting supplies between sites).
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • High attention to hygiene and cleanliness standards.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to follow SOPs.

Desirable Skills & Experience:

  • Experience using and maintaining large-scale specialist equipment.
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001 standards, health & safety policies, and laboratory regulations.
